1112 – Marriage of Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Barcelona, and Douce I, Countess of Provence.
1451 – Mehmed II ("The Conqueror") became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
1488 – Bartolomeu Dias of Portugal landed in Mossel Bay after becoming the first European to make it around the Cape of Good Hope.
1509 – Battle of Diu, India: a Portuguese fleet defeated a fleet of the Ottoman Empire and its allies (Venice, Ragusa, Gujarat, Egypt, and Calicut).
